Yes, it was most inspiring to visit you!

Right now, I am preparing a presentation of my experiences during this trip (we also visited SiG, MaRS, Creative Class, University of Waterloo and Federal Ministry of Research and Innovation). My department, Scandinavian Languages at Stockholm University, is into practice oriented research and education, so we have a lot to learn from you - and perhaps you from us ;-)

(As a linguist, I'm not that impressed by automatic translation ... I would say that the correct translation of 'inspiration' is 'inspiration', only with a different pronounciation ...)

Greeting from Stockholm University!

Congratulations David. I think that it is too easy to forget that knowledge mobilization units should produce "products" to cater to all markets including the traditional market seeking peer reviewed articles. This is a good contribution to our understanding.

My first reaction to this blog entry was - ouch. 34 mobilizers walk into a bar - did nobody see the bar?

Old jokes aside, I would like to challenge your idea of leading. Is leadership more or is leadership serving?

I suggest that York is in a leadership position not because it is necessarily better than other institutions but rather, because it is allocating adequate resources and personnel to KMb. The number of projects may be a side effect or outcome of the dedicated resources - one that is easily counted and evaluated - however, I think the real effect of the investments is still to come. I think you will see a culture change (if you are not seeing it already) of a research enterprise that support both Mode 1 and 2 in an ongoing dance of exploration and application and exploration.

The challenge I had with knowledge mobilization when I was at SSHRC can be described as a big mandate (Canada) with few resources (1.5 people and $350k). You have a defined mandate (York) and reasonable resources. This is a good formula and it is producing interesting results. I suggest that York is serving its community well and the community in turn serves York.

Gary, I applaud you for this excellent blog post. The personal side of our professional pursuit is nice to see! You're more than a volunteer, you're part of the big KM family we have developed here, and this is due in large part to David's leadership in fostering this environment.

PS - the campaign has been successful and I now have a head shot for my social networking sites which does not have sunglasses, sunsets, ducks in water, or (most embarassingly) me blinking!

But that pic of me on bass guitar isn't too bad, eh? Didn't think that was appropriate for KM social networking however!!

Eyes wide open,
Michael
